PROJECT 101
What Kind of Projects Can I Do?
Sample categories your project can fall under -
- Innovation
- Digital Design
- Environment and Nature Science
- Human Behavior
- Architecture
Whatever category you choose your project idea in, we recommend that you follow the Scientific Method that has been introduced to the students in grade appropriate fashion.
Students should not experiment with molds or bacteria of any kind, as these can be particularly hazardous to student health. These projects will not be allowed at the East Side or Cobb County Elementary Science Fair.
*Models, including volcanoes or robots, will not be accepted as experiments.
*By registering the student, you hereby agree that you understand the terms and rules for the science fair and what items are not allowed at projects. Exhibitors who do not adhere to the regulations will fail to qualify for competition.
Keep in Mind -- Parents are encouraged to guide students but not build the project. Remember, a good project is planned and developed over a period of time.
How Do I Display My Project?
Students must use a tri-fold display board to showcase their projects. Please make sure the display board meets the following requirements
- is no greater than 48×48,
- includes the student’s name, grade and teacher’s name.
If you have any special needs (i.e. electrical outlet, etc.) you MUST e-mail the Science Fair Committee at eastsidepta.sciencefair@gmail.com PRIOR to the event.
Your allotted display space is approximately 48” wide by 18” deep. This will accommodate display boards up to 48 inches wide with space in front of the board for small items you may want to display.
Students will be sharing display space so please be respectful of others.
If you have any special needs, please don’t forget to notify science committee prior to the event at eastsidepta.sciencefair@gmail.com
Here is a visual guideline for displaying the information.
How Are Projects Awarded?
East Side Elementary invites judges who have a long standing history and background in a scientific area. Entries are judged based on various criteria including the following -
-
Creativity/Innovation (Does the student demonstrate curiosity and creativity in the project?)
-
Scientific Thought (Is there a clear question? Do the results support the conclusion?)
-
Thoroughness (Did the student have a good plan, and was all data collected?)
-
Clarity (Is the project and display easy to understand?)
-
Skills (Is this the student’s own work?)
There will be a first place, second place, and third place winner awarded for each grade level. The first place winner from grades 1-5 will advance to the county Science Fair. Please note that while kindergarteners are eligible to participate at the East Side Fair, they cannot advance to the county level. Students that advance to the county fair will need to register and create a digital poster as that event will be help virtually. We will send more information once winners are announced but templates can be found HERE.
Ribbons will be awarded on the day of the science fair (attached to their display board), and each student that participates will receive a certificate. Please note that the student’s individual grade will not be shared after the event.
