PTA Martin Luther King Jr. “I Have a Dream” 2025 essay/art contest
This year, the East Side PTA is hosting an optional Martin Luther King, Jr. Essay/Art Contest.
All students are invited to participate in a school-wide contest to submit either an original essay
or artwork (grade specific) to celebrate Black History Month. If entering the contest, the
essay/art should be completed at home and turned into the school following the
directions/timeline below.
Rules and Guidelines:
Students in grades Kindergarten through 2nd grade are invited to submit an original drawing
that would show Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., giving his famous speech but in 2025. Students
may write on or around this drawing with anything you think he would say or any revisions to
any of his original quotes. Please do not print pictures, images or illustrations. These drawings
must be original!
Students in grades 3rd through 5th grade, are invited to submit an original essay (2 pages max)
about how Dr. King would write his famous speech this current year (a 2025 version). Please be
creative but original. Please do not use AI or chat GPT (or the like). Speeches should not
include politicized material but rather reflect on Dr. King’s dream and work towards equality.
Submissions will be judged by the PTA committee on the relevancy to the theme and originality
of ideas. Please type in Times New Roman double spaced. Please include your name, grade and
teacher.

Entries must be completed at home by the student.

Submissions must be printed and placed in the Black History Month contest box in the front office by Monday, February 24th at the end of the school day (2pm).

Submissions will be judged by the Cultural programs PTA committee and the winner for EACH grade will be announced on Friday, February 28th during the morning announcements.
Prizes:
**Prizes will be awarded for EACH grade. Prizes will include a Target gift card and other gift
cards from local stores. Prizes will be available to be picked up in the main office after morning
announcements on Friday, February 28th.
